Tip
Keeping pet dander out of your environment as much as possible requires frequent cleaning, vacuuming and pet grooming -- or simply opting not to have a pet.
Cat allergies are primarily caused by dander.
Pet dander can be a pervasive problem in your home, especially if you have pet allergies. It can even be problematic if you often visit a home that has a cat or dog. Once dander gets onto your clothes it's difficult to get rid of, because some flecks are microscopic. However, there are steps you can take to remove dander.
Step 1
Use the hand attachment on a HEPA-filter-equipped vacuum cleaner to suck the dander off of your clothes. If you're wearing them, have a friend help vacuum all clothing surfaces.
Step 2
Use a lint brush to get rid of all visible dander. Afterward, wipe your clothing down with hypo-allergenic pet wipes to neutralize the allergic effects of the dander. You should only use the wipes on dark, sturdy fabrics, so the moisture doesn't cause a stain. If you're uncertain about a fabric, try using the wipe in an inconspicuous spot, and wait for it to dry. If the wipe doesn't leave a stain, it should be safe to lightly coat the entire garment.
Step 3
Wash and dry clothes in the hottest water possible for the fabric, and use an anti-allergen laundry detergent. Detergents designated specifically for pet allergies can be found at pet stores and other retailers. When drying clothes, make sure the lint catcher is clean when you put in a load.
