Fast & Effective Home Remedies to Remove Skunk Odor from Your Dog

Dogs love to seek out wild animals. Occasionally your dog may become too curious or persistent and will sniff out a skunk. Unfortunately, a skunk will spray your dog, leaving him unbearable. There are some quick fixes that you can do at home to rid your pet of his smell and make him welcome in your home again.

Tomato Juice

The most common remedy to rid the smell of skunk from your dog is tomato juice. Small dogs will take two large cans of tomato juice, and larger dogs will take several more cans. Soak your dog about 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse the dog completely and then wash him with shampoo.

Home Remedy

Peroxide

A popular home remedy to rid the smell of skunk is 1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4-cup baking soda, 1 teaspoon dish detergent. Mix the solution together and cover your pet. Leave the mixture on for at least 10 minutes and rinse clean. Repeat if necessary. Throw away whatever is left.

Other Remedies

Some other suggested remedies include vinegar and water. Soak the animal and rinse, continue to repeat if the smell remains. He may no longer smell like a skunk, but he will smell like a pickle. Powdered douche kits are excellent for removing the smell, and others say bathing dogs in Sprite or 7-Up will do the trick.

Advice from Groomers

Groomers use a solution of dish detergent. Soak the dog and add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of salt to the water, completely saturating your dog. Soak the dog in the salt/soap solution for about 10 minutes. Completely rinse and repeat, if necessary.
