Do Dogs Need Clothing in Cold Weather?

For most healthy, short-haired dogs, vets say coats and sweaters aren't necessary if they’re just out for a quick tinkle. Some dogs, like Alaskan huskies and Siberian huskies, are very cold tolerant due to their thick double-coats, and generally do not need much -- or any -- additional shelter from the elements.

However, if your dog loves to play outdoors, or stays out for extended periods, there are signs to look for that could suggest they’re uncomfortable. These include shivering, pulling toward the door after a few minutes, sitting, or licking their paws.

Consider the following:

- The type of fur your dog has. Long, thick fur usually provides plenty of insulation. Short, thin fur offers little protection.

- Senior dogs and puppies should be protected as they might not be able to regulate their body heat as well.

- Small dogs often have a harder time staying warm.

- Check the weather. Even dogs with the thickest fur may need a little help if the weather is especially nasty.

- Don't forget about their feet! Paw pads can get cut by ice or burned by salt, and walking in snow can make them cold and sore. Booties offer warmth and protection from harsh terrain.

_Consider your dog's overall comfort level and how they typically adjust to cold weather when deciding if they need clothing. If you're not sure, it's always best to err on the side of caution and provide them with some extra warmth._
