How to Get Rid of Fleas on Hamsters
- To keep any potential flea infestations from spreading to other pets in the house, immediately isolate the affected hamster in a separate cage.
- Place this cage in a room that can be easily closed off from the rest of the house.
Step 2: Treat the Hamster
There are several safe flea treatment products available for hamsters, such as:
- Revolution: Can be applied once monthly and treats fleas, ear mites, lice, and heartworms.
- Advantage: Can be applied once monthly and treats fleas, lice, and ear mites.
- Pyrethrins or permethrins powder: Dust can be applied directly onto a clean cloth and rubbed into the hamster’s coat.
- These dust products are less advisable than liquid applications, as inhalation of the powder can cause respiratory problems. Be sure to read and follow all instructions provided on the product label before use.
Step 3: Remove Fleas From the Hamster's Environment
- Empty and wash the cage and bedding in hot soapy water or replace with new items (cardboard bedding may be ideal for this purpose as it can easily be disposed of later on).
- Allow the cage to dry completely before replacing it with fresh bedding.
- Vacuum the area around the cage, as well as any other areas where the hamster may have been, to remove any wandering fleas or debris that may contain eggs.
- Discard the vacuum cleaner bag immediately after vacuuming.
- Repeat the vacuuming and cleaning process every few days for at least 3 months in order to break the flea life cycle and prevent new fleas from emerging.
Step 4: Wash Fabrics
- Wash all fabrics that may have been in contact with the hamster, such as bedding, towels, and clothing, in hot water (at least 122 degrees Fahrenheit) and soap.
- This is especially important if you’re using a washing machine, as washing your regular laundry using the same settings is a quick and easy way to spread the flea infestation to other parts of your home.
Step 5: Use Flea Traps
- Flea traps can help to catch wandering fleas and prevent them from infesting your home.
- Set out the traps in areas where the hamster has spent time, such as the room in which the cage was kept.
Step 6: Talk to Your Vet
- If you have any concerns about flea treatment, prevention, or if the above methods don’t seem to be clearing up your hamster’s infestation, talk to your veterinarian.
