How to Build an Off the Ground Dog Kennel
Materials:
- Pressure-treated wood (2x4s, 2x6s, and plywood)
- Wood screws
- Saw
- Drill
- Sander
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Wood stain or sealer (optional)
- Metal roofing (optional)
Instructions:
Step 1: Cut the wood
- Cut the 2x4s to the following lengths:
- 4 pieces at 30 inches (for the legs)
- 4 pieces at 24 inches (for the top frame)
- 4 pieces at 18 inches (for the middle braces)
- 4 pieces at 12 inches (for the bottom frame)
- Cut the 2x6s to the following lengths:
- 4 pieces at 24 inches (for the top platform)
- 4 pieces at 18 inches (for the middle shelf)
- 4 pieces at 12 inches (for the bottom platform)
- Cut the plywood to the following sizes:
- 2 pieces at 24x18 inches (for the top and middle platform)
- 2 pieces at 18x12 inches (for the bottom platform)
Step 2: Assemble the legs
1. Join two 30-inch and two 24-inch 2x4s using wood screws to create a rectangular frame.
2. Repeat step 1 to create the other leg frame.
Step 3: Attach the top frame
1. Attach the two 24-inch 2x4s to the top of the legs, one on each side, using wood screws.
2. Make sure the top frame is centered on the legs.
Step 4: Add the middle braces
1. Attach the four 18-inch 2x4s to the legs and the top frame using wood screws.
2. Place one brace in the middle of each side of the kennel.
Step 5: Attach the bottom frame
1. Attach the two 12-inch 2x4s to the legs and the middle braces using wood screws.
2. Make sure the bottom frame is centered on the kennel.
Step 6: Attach the platforms
1. Place one of the 24x18 inch plywood pieces on top of the top frame and secure it with wood screws.
2. Repeat step 1 with the other plywood piece for the middle shelf.
3. Place one of the 18x12 inch plywood pieces on top of the bottom frame and secure it with wood screws.
Step 7: Sand the kennel
- Sand all the surfaces of the kennel to remove any rough edges or splinters.
Step 8: Stain or seal the kennel (optional)
- If desired, apply wood stain or sealer to protect the kennel from the elements.
Step 9: Add metal roofing (optional)
- If you want to provide additional weather protection, consider adding metal roofing to the top of the kennel.
Your off-the-ground dog kennel is now complete. Place it in a sheltered spot in your backyard or on your patio, and your dog will have a cozy and comfortable place to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
