How and When Do Puppies Eyes & Ears Open?
The process of a puppy's eyes opening is gradual. First, a small slit will appear in the corner of the eye. This slit will gradually widen over the course of a few days until the entire eye is open.
As a puppy's eyes begin to open, they will be very sensitive to light. For this reason, it is important to keep the puppy in a well-lit room but out of direct sunlight. You should also avoid shining a light directly into the puppy's eyes.
Once a puppy's eyes are fully open, they will begin to develop rapidly. By the time the puppy is 8 weeks old, they will have 20/20 vision.
Here are some things you can do to help your puppy's eyes develop properly:
* Make sure the puppy is getting enough sleep. Puppies need around 18 hours of sleep per day.
* Keep the puppy in a well-lit room but out of direct sunlight.
* Avoid shining a light directly into the puppy's eyes.
* If your pup's eyes have an opaque membrane, be it partial or complete, see a vet ASAP; that's a medical emergency.
* If you have any concerns about your puppy's eyes, talk to your veterinarian.
