How to Express Your Anal Gland from the Outside
1. Preparation:
- Ensure you have the proper equipment, including gloves and lubricant.
- Place the pet in a comfortable and secure position, either standing or lying on their side.
2. Locate the Anal Glands:
- The anal glands are located on each side of the anus, about 4-8 mm from the opening.
3. Apply Lubricant:
- Apply a small amount of lubricant to the area around the anus.
4. Express the Glands:
- Using a gloved finger, gently apply pressure to the area on either side of the anus, moving in a downward direction.
- Continue applying pressure until you feel the glands empty or until a small amount of fluid is expressed.
5. Clean Up:
- Wipe away any expressed fluid with a cotton ball or tissue.
It's important to note that expressing anal glands externally is not always necessary and can sometimes cause complications if done incorrectly. If you are concerned about your pet's anal glands, consult with your veterinarian for the best course of action.
