DIY Bitter Apple Spray: Safeguard Your Home from Chewing Dogs
While chewing is a natural behavior for dogs, it does not mean you must allow your puppy to chew on the furniture, your shoes or other belongings. You can dissuade your dog from chewing on such items by spraying them with a distasteful, non-toxic substance. While commercial "bitter apple" sprays are readily available, you can easily create a homemade alternative.
Apple Cider Vinegar Alternative
Combine two parts apple cider vinegar with one part water in a plastic spray bottle. Shake the bottle well and spray a generous amount on a clean cloth. Allow your dog to taste the cloth briefly -- in most cases, your pet will spit the cloth out quickly and display displeasure. This will help your dog associate the smell of the spray with the bad taste. You can then apply the mixture to items you wish to protect from your pup. Before spraying it on any furniture, be sure to test the spray on an inconspicuous spot to check for discoloration.
