How to Train Your 1-Year-Old Dog
1. Sit: Hold a treat in front of its nose and lure it upwards, encouraging the dog to sit. When its bottom touches the ground, give it the treat with praise. Repeat until your dog sits when you say "sit".
2. Come: Begin indoors, calling the dog by name and enticing it to come to you with treats or toys. When it does, celebrate and reward with a treat. Use this command when your dog is outdoors as well.
3. Stay: Once your dog can sit, have it sit in front of you. Hold up a hand and say "stay". Take a few steps back, and if the dog stays still, reward with a treat and repeat. Gradually increase the distance and duration as your dog improves.
4. Heel: Attach the leash and start walking, saying "heel". Hold treats near your waist to encourage the dog to walk next to you. When the dog does, reward it. When it tries to pull ahead, stop walking and gently pull the leash back, repeating "heel".
5. Down: Begin with your dog sitting. Place a treat close to the ground in front of its nose and slowly move it down and forward. As its head and body go down, say "down". When it's lying down, give it the treat and praise.
6. Off: When your dog jumps on you, say "off". If it complies, give it a treat. If not, stand up and turn away, ignoring it until it gets down. Then, call it back and reward with a treat.
