How to Make a Clicker for Dog Training
- 2 small wooden dowels (about 6 inches long and 1/4 inch thick)
- 1 small eye hook
- 1 small wooden bead
- 1 piece of string (about 12 inches long)
- Wire Cutters
- Pen
- Hammer
Instructions:
Step 1: Make a hole at one end of each dowel. Use the wire cutters to make a small hole at one end of each dowel, about 1 inch from the end.
Step 2: Attach the eye hook to one dowel. Insert the eye hook into the hole in one of the dowels. Use a hammer to tap the eye hook into place until it is secure.
Step 3: Attach the bead and string to the other dowel. Slide the bead onto the other dowel. Tie a knot at one end of the string and loop it around the dowel under the bead. Tie another knot to secure the string in place.
Step 4: Connect the two dowels.** Hold the dowel with the bead on top of the dowel with the eye hook. The dowels should form a "T" shape. Wrap the free end of the string around the dowel with the eye hook several times and tie a knot to secure it.
Step 5: Hold the clicker and test it.** Hold the clicker in one hand and the bead in your other hand. Pull on the string to move the bead up and down the dowel. The dowels should make a clicking sound when the bead hits the dowel with the eye hook.
Step 6: Train your dog to respond to the clicker.** The clicker is a positive reinforcement tool that can help you train your dog to learn new commands and behaviors. Start by associating the click with something positive, such as a treat or a pet. Once your dog associates the click with a positive reward, you can start using the clicker to shape and reinforce desired behaviors.
