How to Fix a Chain-Link Fence So Dog Jump It
1. The fence is too short: Dogs can easily jump over fences that are too short, generally anything below 6 ft tall.
2. Large gaps in the fence: If there are large gaps in the fence, dogs may be able to fit through and jump over the fence.
3. The dog has a strong jumping ability: Some dogs, like certain athletic breeds, may be able to jump higher than average dogs and clear a chain fence.
Here are tips to prevent a dog from jumping a chain-link fence:
1. Increase the height of the fence: If possible, increase the height of the fence to at least 6 feet or higher to make it more difficult for a dog to jump over it.
2. Reduce gaps in the fence: Make sure there are no gaps in the fence large enough for a dog to fit through. Tightly secure the fence to the posts and eliminate any loose wires.
3. Angle the top of the fence outward: This makes it more difficult for dogs to get a good grip on the top of the fence and jump over.
4. Add barbed wire or an electrical deterrent to the top of the fence: These deterrents can discourage dogs from attempting to jump over the fence.
5. Bury the bottom of the fence: Dig a trench about 12 inches deep along the bottom of the fence and bury it. This will prevent dogs from digging under the fence.
6. Use a coyote roller: Attach a rotating, barbed roller to the top of the chain-link fence. The roller will spin when the dog jumps against it and makes it difficult to gain a foothold.
7. Install an "L-shaped" fence extension: This involves attaching an additional section of fence, angled outward, at the top of the existing chain-link fence. This makes it more difficult for dogs to jump over.
If your dog is still able to jump over the fence after taking these measures, you may need to consider alternative containment options such as an underground dog fence, a kennel or a taller, more secure fence.
