How to Make a Clicker for Dog Training
- Empty plastic bottle (such as a water bottle or soda bottle)
- A sturdy stick or rod measuring 12 to 18 inches in length
- Glue
- A brad or small nail
- A small metal washer or a piece of cardboard
Instructions
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half. You can use a pair of scissors or a craft knife.
2. Glue the stick or rod to the bottom half of the bottle, centering it so that it's perpendicular to the bottle.
3. Once the glue is dry, insert the brad or nail through the center of the bottle cap and the washer or piece of cardboard. The washer or cardboard will help to keep the brad from pulling through the bottle cap.
4. Test the clicker by snapping the bottle cap against the stick. You should hear a clear, clicking sound. If the sound is too muffled, you can adjust the position of the brad or nail.
5. Once you're happy with the sound of the clicker, you can start training your dog!
How to Use a Clicker for Dog Training
1. Start by teaching your dog the basic command "sit." To do this, hold a treat in front of your dog's nose and slowly move it up over its head. As your dog follows the treat with its nose, its bottom will naturally lower into a sitting position. As soon as your dog's bottom hits the ground, say "sit" and click the clicker. Then, give your dog a treat.
2. Repeat this exercise several times until your dog understands that sitting when you say "sit" will earn them a treat.
3. Once your dog has mastered the sit command, you can start using the clicker to teach them other commands, such as "come," "stay," and "down."
4. To teach your dog the "come" command, start by standing a few feet away from them. Hold a treat in front of your face and call your dog's name. As soon as they look at you, click the clicker and give them the treat.
5. Repeat this exercise several times, gradually increasing the distance between you and your dog. Eventually, your dog will come to you when you call them, even if they're across the room.
6. To teach your dog the "stay" command, start by having them sit. Then, hold your hand up in front of them and say "stay." If your dog stays in a sitting position, click the clicker and give them a treat.
7. Repeat this exercise several times, gradually increasing the amount of time you expect your dog to stay. Eventually, they'll be able to stay in a sit position for several minutes.
8. To teach your dog the "down" command, start by having them sit. Then, hold your hand down in front of them and say "down." If your dog lies down, click the clicker and give them a treat.
9. Repeat this exercise several times, gradually increasing the distance between your hand and the floor. Eventually, your dog will be able to lie down from any position.
Tips for Clicker Training
* Be consistent with your training and use the clicker only when your dog performs the desired behavior.
* Keep training sessions short and fun. Five to ten minutes is a good starting point.
* Use positive reinforcement only. Never punish your dog for not performing a behavior correctly.
* Be patient and understanding. It may take some time for your dog to learn what you're asking of them.
