How to Make a Weighted Dog Harness
For this project, you will need:
- 1 yard of heavy-duty fabric (such as canvas or Cordura)
- 1/2 yard of batting (such as cotton or polyester)
- 1/2 yard of anti-pill fleece
- 1 roll of 1-inch wide webbing (at least 3 yards)
- 2 buckles (at least 1 inch wide)
- 1 D-ring (at least 1 inch wide)
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
Step 2: Cut out the fabric pieces.
From the heavy-duty fabric, cut out:
- 2 pieces that are 18 inches by 9 inches
- 2 pieces that are 6 inches by 9 inches
From the batting, cut out:
- 2 pieces that are 18 inches by 9 inches
- 1 piece that is 6 inches by 18 inches
From the anti-pill fleece, cut out:
- 1 piece that is 18 inches by 9 inches
- 1 piece that is 6 inches by 9 inches
Step 3: Sew the harness pieces together.
Front panel
1. Starting with the wrong sides facing, sew the two 18-inch by 9-inch pieces of heavy-duty fabric together along one long edge. Press open the seam.
2. Turn the front panel right side out and press flat.
3. Sew the two 6-inch by 9-inch pieces of heavy-duty fabric together along one long edge. Press open the seam.
4. Turn the bottom panel right side out and press flat.
5. Layer the bottom panel onto the front panel, with the right sides facing. Sew the two pieces together along the bottom edge. Press open the seam.
Back panel
1. Starting with the wrong sides facing, sew the two 18-inch by 9-inch pieces of batting together along one long edge. Press open the seam.
2. Turn the back panel right side out and press flat.
3. Layer the back panel onto the front panel, with the right sides facing. Sew the two pieces together along the top edge. Press open the seam.
Side panels
1. Starting with the wrong sides facing, sew the two 18-inch by 9-inch pieces of anti-pill fleece together along one long edge. Press open the seam.
2. Turn the side panels right side out and press flat.
3. Layer the side panels onto the front panel, with the right sides facing. Sew the two pieces together along the side edges. Press open the seams.
Step 4: Add the webbing straps.
1. Cut the webbing into 4 equal pieces.
2. Fold each piece of webbing in half and sew the ends together to create a loop.
3. Attach the loops to the front panel of the harness using the buckles.
4. Attach the D-ring to the center back of the harness.
Step 5: Add the weighted fill.
1. Cut the batting into 1-inch squares.
2. Place the squares of batting into the harness until it is filled to your desired weight.
3. Sew the openings in the harness closed.
Step 6: Enjoy your new weighted dog harness!
