How Soon Before Boarding Should My Dog Get a Bordetella Shot?

The Bordetella vaccine, also known as the kennel cough vaccine, is a non-core vaccine that is given prior to boarding your pet. It protects against respiratory infections caused by the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica, which is commonly found in kennels and other places where dogs congregate.

The vaccine comes in two forms: an intranasal vaccine and an injectable vaccine. The intranasal vaccine is administered through the nose, while the injectable vaccine is given as an injection.

The intranasal vaccine is generally considered to be more effective than the injectable vaccine, and it also has a shorter duration of immunity. The intranasal vaccine provides immunity for up to six months, while the injectable vaccine provides immunity for up to one year.

Your dog should receive the Bordetella vaccine at least two weeks before boarding, but no more than six months before boarding. This will ensure that your dog is protected against Bordetella bronchiseptica while boarding.
