How to Perform CPR on a Rabbit

Performing CPR on a rabbit requires specific techniques and considerations. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to perform CPR on a rabbit:

1. Check for Responsiveness:

- Gently shake or tap the rabbit to see if it responds.

- If the rabbit is unresponsive, proceed with CPR.

2. Open the Airway:

- Gently extend the rabbit's head and neck to open the airway.

- Be careful not to overextend as this could cause injury.

3. Check for Breathing:

- Observe the rabbit's chest and abdomen for signs of breathing.

- If the rabbit is not breathing or is gasping, provide artificial breaths.

4. Artificial Breaths:

- Cover the rabbit's nose and mouth with your mouth, creating an airtight seal.

- Gently blow air into the rabbit's lungs until the chest rises.

- Give 2-3 breaths at a rate of about 1 breath every 2 seconds.

5. Chest Compressions:

- Position your thumbs side-by-side on the rabbit's chest, just behind the front legs.

- Place your other fingers around the rabbit's chest for support.

- Apply gentle but firm pressure on the chest, compressing it about 1/2 to 1 inch deep.

- Perform 30 compressions at a rate of about 2 compressions per second.

6. Continue Cycles:

- Continue alternating between 2-3 artificial breaths and 30 chest compressions in a continuous cycle.

- Perform CPR for approximately 2 minutes (5 cycles).

7. Check for Signs of Life:

- After 2 minutes, check the rabbit's breathing and heart rate.

- If the rabbit starts breathing on its own and has a heartbeat, stop CPR and keep the rabbit warm.

8. Seek Veterinary Attention:

- Regardless of whether the rabbit responds to CPR, it is crucial to seek immediate veterinary attention.

- The vet can assess the rabbit's condition, provide appropriate treatment, and determine the underlying cause of the emergency.

Important Notes:

- Always handle rabbits gently to avoid causing further stress or injury.

- If the rabbit is conscious but not breathing, providing artificial breaths may be sufficient.

- If you are unsure about performing CPR on a rabbit, consult with a veterinarian or trained animal care professional.
