How To Potty Train A Puppy

Step 1: Set a schedule and stick to it.

Puppies need to be taken out to potty on a regular schedule, not just when it's convenient for you. The schedule will vary depending on the puppy's age, but a good rule of thumb is to take him out every two hours during the day and once or twice at night.

Step 2: Crate training.

Crates can help to housetrain puppies by creating a designated space for them to eliminate. When your puppy is in his crate, he should not have access to anything he can chew on or destroy. This will help to prevent him from developing bad habits, such as chewing on furniture or eating human food.

Step 3: Positive reinforcement.

When your puppy goes potty in the right spot, be sure to reward him with treats and praise. This positive reinforcement will help to teach him that going potty in the right spot is a good thing, and he'll want to keep doing it.

Step 4: Clean up accidents immediately.

If your puppy has an accident in the house, be sure to clean it up immediately. If the scent is strong, the puppy will be more likely to go in that spot again. Clean the area with an enzymatic cleaner that will break down the smell of urine or feces.

Step 5: Persistence is key.

Potty training a puppy takes time and patience. Don't get discouraged if your puppy has a few accidents. Just keep at it, and he'll eventually learn.
