Why Does My Chihuahua Have Floppy Ears?

Genetics:

The floppy ears in Chihuahuas are a result of a dominant gene that affects the cartilage in the ears. This gene causes the cartilage to be weaker and more flexible, resulting in floppy ears.

Selective Breeding:

Over time, breeders selectively bred Chihuahuas with floppy ears to enhance this physical characteristic and create the distinct appearance that we know today. Breeders favored Chihuahuas with larger, more expressive eyes and floppy ears, which gave them a unique and visually appealing look.

Age and Development:

Chihuahua puppies are born with erect ears, but as they grow and develop, the weight of the ear cartilage causes them to gradually droop and become floppy. This usually happens between the ages of 4 to 6 months, but it can vary from one Chihuahua to another.
