What Is Pet Dander?

Pet dander is a common allergen that can cause allergic reactions in some people. It is made up of tiny flakes of skin that are shed by animals with fur or feathers, such as cats, dogs, rabbits, and birds. Dander can be found on the animal's coat, in the air, and on surfaces around the home. When someone who is allergic to pet dander inhales these flakes, they can experience symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and difficulty breathing.

People who are allergic to pet dander may also experience:

* Skin rashes

* Hives

* Swelling

* Anaphylaxis (a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction)

If you think you may be allergic to pet dander, it is important to see an allergist for diagnosis and treatment. There are several ways to reduce exposure to pet dander, including:

* Avoiding contact with animals that you are allergic to. This may mean avoiding homes where pets are present or asking pet owners to wash their hands before petting you.

* Keeping your home clean and free of pet dander. This can be done by vacuuming regularly, washing bedding and curtains in hot water, and using an air purifier.

* Using a HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaner and air conditioner. HEPA filters can remove pet dander from the air.

* Taking allergy medication. Allergy medication can help to relieve symptoms caused by pet dander.
