Why Do Dogs Live Such Short Lives?

Several factors contribute to dogs having shorter lifespans than humans.

- Metabolic rate: Dogs' metabolisms are much faster than humans'. This means they age more quickly and reach physical maturity earlier.

- Genetics: Some dog breeds are simply predisposed to living shorter lives. For example, giant breeds like Great Danes and Mastiffs typically have shorter lifespans than smaller breeds like Chihuahuas and Poodles.

- Size: Smaller dogs live on average longer than larger dogs, despite the common idea that smaller dogs are more 'fragile'.

- Environment and lifestyle: Factors such as diet, exercise, and access to veterinary care can significantly impact a dog's lifespan. Dogs fed a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and receiving regular vet checkups tend to live longer than those that do not.
