How to Birth a Puppy When the Sac Has Broken

If the mother dog's water has broken, the puppies should be born within 24 hours. Here are the steps on how to birth a puppy:

1) Prepare a whelping box. This should be a large, clean box that is lined with newspapers or towels. The box should be placed in a quiet, warm room.

2) Make sure the mother dog is comfortable. She may want to nest in the whelping box, or she may want to stay near you. If she is anxious, try to calm her down by petting her and talking to her in a soothing voice.

3) Wait for the puppies to be born. The puppies will usually be born headfirst, but they can also be born breech (tail-first). If a puppy is born breech, you may need to gently pull it out by the legs.

4) Once the puppy is born, clean its nose and mouth so that it can breathe. You can also rub the puppy's body to stimulate circulation.

5) Allow the mother dog to lick her puppies. This will help to clean them and remove any remaining fluid from their lungs.

6) Cut the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord is the cord that connects the puppy to the placenta. It should be cut about an inch from the puppy's body. You can use a pair of sharp scissors to cut the cord.

7) Weigh the puppies. Puppies should be weighed within 24 hours of birth. This will help you to track their growth and development.

8) Feed the puppies. Puppies will need to be fed colostrum, which is a special milk that is produced by the mother dog. Colostrum provides the puppies with essential nutrients and antibodies.

9) Keep the puppies warm. Puppies are born with very little body fat, so they need to be kept warm. You can use a heat lamp or a heating pad to keep the puppies warm.

10) Monitor the puppies closely. Puppies are very fragile, so it is important to monitor them closely for any signs of illness. If you have any concerns about the puppies, contact your veterinarian immediately.
