From Stray to Spoiled: The Remarkable Rescue and Luxury Life of Alfredito, the Donkey

While most people think of the “wild donkey” only from the animated character in DreamWorks’ “Shrek,” the real story of Alfredito proves that even the most unlikely animals can find a second chance at life. Born into dire conditions, the two‑day‑old donkey was barely able to walk when Yaileny Sanchez first found him at a local shelter.

“He looked more like a shadow than a donkey,” Yaileny told Cuddle Buddies. She immediately arranged for a veterinary assessment, and after a 13‑day recovery period, Alfredito was cleared to join her family.

Since then, Alfredito has become the unofficial mascot of Yaileny’s home. He wanders the house, drinks from the tap, and follows her like a loyal companion. Yaileny, who founded Second Chance Farm to give farm animals a fresh start, keeps Alfredito surrounded by plenty of treats and indoor comfort.

Now old enough to graze outside, Alfredito still enjoys the cozy indoors, proving that a rescued donkey can live a life of both freedom and luxury.

From Stray to Spoiled: The Remarkable Rescue and Luxury Life of Alfredito, the Donkey

Donkeys have been domesticated for 5,000–7,000 years, originating in Africa before spreading worldwide. Their reputation for stubbornness actually reflects a high level of intelligence. A 2021 study in Applied Animal Behaviour Science found that donkeys often weigh potential risks before acting, which can be interpreted as cautionary wisdom rather than obstinacy.

With proper care, donkeys thrive in outdoor environments and can coexist peacefully with other pets. From Alfredito’s friendly interactions with indoor animals to the famed friendship between a donkey and a Maine‑Coon cat, these gentle creatures prove they’re more than just working beasts.
