The Cape buffalo, also known as the African buffalo, is a massive bovine that can weigh up to 2,000 lb (≈ 900 kg). Native to sub‑Saharan Africa, these giants are recognized for their thick, curved horns and, in adult males, a fused‑horn base called a “boss” that protects the skull during confrontations. Though they appear relaxed, Cape buffaloes are capable of rapid movement when threatened.
