How to Take Care of a Mourning Dove

Here are some tips on how to care for a mourning dove:

1. Offer a proper diet: Mourning doves primarily feed on seeds and grains. You can provide a mix of seeds, such as millet, canary seed, and safflower seeds. Additionally, you can offer cracked corn, milo, and wheat berries. Ensure the seeds are fresh and free from mold. You should also provide fresh water daily in a shallow dish or birdbath.

2. Provide a safe and comfortable housing: Mourning doves need a safe and secure place to live. You can provide a cage or aviary that is at least 3 feet (1 meter) long, 2 feet (0.61 meters) wide, and 2 feet (0.61 meters) high. The cage or aviary should be made of wire mesh with a mesh size of 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) or smaller to prevent the doves from escaping. The enclosure should also have perches of different diameters and at different heights so the doves can rest and climb.

3. Maintain proper hygiene: Keep the cage or aviary clean by regularly removing soiled bedding and uneaten food. Replace the water daily, and clean the food and water containers regularly to prevent the growth of bacteria. You should also mist the doves with water once or twice a day to help them stay hydrated and clean their feathers.

4. Provide socialization opportunities: Mourning doves are social animals and do well when kept in pairs or small groups. If you only have one mourning dove, you must spend time interacting with it to provide it with social stimulation. This can be done by talking to it, offering treats, and allowing it to interact with you outside of its enclosure.

5. Monitor health: Regularly observe your mourning doves for any signs of illness or injury. Common signs of illness include lethargy, ruffled feathers, loss of appetite, and diarrhea. If you notice any of these signs, you must take the dove to a veterinarian immediately.

6. Consider additional enrichment: You can provide additional enrichment for your mourning doves by providing toys and activities. This can include hanging bells, mirrors, and other objects in their enclosure. You can also offer foraging opportunities by hiding treats in their cage or aviary for them to find.

By following these tips, you can provide your mourning doves with a safe and comfortable home and help them thrive.
