How to Make a Bird Cage Seed Catcher
* 1 piece of fabric (at least 24 inches by 18 inches)
* 2 wooden dowels (12 inches long)
* 4 metal grommets
* A sewing machine
* Scissors
* A measuring tape
* A hammer
Instructions:
1. Cut the fabric to the desired size.
2. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides together.
3. Sew a 1/2-inch seam along the long edge of the folded fabric, leaving the short ends open.
4. Turn the fabric right side out, using a point turner or other blunt object to push out the corners.
5. Press the fabric flat.
6. Insert the wooden dowels into the top and bottom hems of the fabric, about 1 inch from the edge.
7. Secure the dowels in place by sewing a few stitches through the fabric and dowels.
8. Fold the short ends of the fabric over twice, and sew a 1/2-inch seam to close them.
9. Punch four holes in the fabric, evenly spaced along the top edge.
10. Insert the metal grommets into the holes and hammer them in place.
Tips
- Use a tightly woven fabric to prevent birdseed from falling through.
- You can add a decorative trim to the top of the seed catcher for a more finished look.
- If you don't have a sewing machine, you can also hand sew the seed catcher.
- You can use any type of fabric you like, but make sure it is durable and can withstand the weight of birdseed.
- You can also add a plastic liner to the seed catcher to make it easier to clean.
- If you don't have wooden dowels, you can also use metal rods or even chopsticks.
- Be sure to measure your birdcage before cutting the fabric so that the seed catcher will fit properly.
