How to Make a Parakeet Nesting Box

Building a nesting box for your parakeet is a relatively easy project that can be completed in just a few steps. Here's a simple guide to get you started:

Materials Needed:

1. A piece of plywood or MDF board (approximately 12 inches x 6 inches)

2. A handsaw or jigsaw

3. A drill

4. A 1-inch wood drill bit

5. A pencil

6. A ruler

7. Wood screws

8. Sandpaper

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut the Wood

Using the handsaw or jigsaw, cut the plywood or MDF board into two pieces:

- Piece A: 12 inches x 5 inches (this will be the front of the nesting box)

- Piece B: 12 inches x 1 inch (this will be the back of the nesting box)

Step 2: Drill the Entrance Hole

On the front piece (Piece A), use the drill and 1-inch wood drill bit to create an entrance hole. The hole should be approximately 2 inches in diameter and positioned about 1 inch from the top of the board.

Step 3: Assemble the Nesting Box

Place the front piece (Piece A) on top of the back piece (Piece B), making sure that the entrance hole is facing upwards. Secure the two pieces together using wood screws.

Step 4: Add a Perch

Cut a small piece of wood dowel or dowel rod to use as a perch. The perch should be about 4 inches long and should be attached to the inside of the nesting box, just below the entrance hole.

Step 5: Sand the Nesting Box

Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges or splinters on the nesting box. This will make it safer for your parakeet.

Step 6: Add Bedding Material

Place some soft bedding material, such as shredded paper or wood shavings, inside the nesting box. This will provide a comfortable place for your parakeet to lay its eggs and raise its chicks.

Your parakeet nesting box is now complete and ready to be placed in your bird's cage. Remember to provide a variety of perches, toys, and food and water dishes to create a comfortable and enriching environment for your feathered friend.
