How to Help a Shih Tzu Give Birth

Giving birth is a natural process, but it can be helpful to have a plan in place in case of any complications. Here are some steps you can take to help your Shih Tzu give birth:

1. Prepare a whelping box. This should be a clean, quiet, and draft-free area where the mother and her puppies can rest. The box should be large enough for the mother to move around comfortably, but not so large that the puppies can get lost. You can line the box with newspapers or towels.

2. Gather supplies. You will need the following supplies on hand:

* A clean towel

* Sterile scissors

* Iodine or betadine

* A bulb syringe

* Petroleum jelly

3. Monitor the mother's labor. The first stage of labor is usually the longest, and it can last for up to 24 hours. During this stage, the mother's contractions will gradually increase in intensity and frequency. The second stage of labor begins when the puppies are born. The third stage of labor occurs when the mother passes the placentas.

4. Help the puppies be born. If the mother is having difficulty giving birth, you can gently pull the puppies out by their feet. Be sure to use sterile scissors to cut the umbilical cords, and then apply iodine or betadine to the umbilical stumps.

5. Clean the puppies. Once the puppies are born, you should clean them with a soft cloth and dry them off. Be sure to remove any mucus from their noses and mouths.

6. Help the mother nurse her puppies. The mother will need to be fed a high-quality diet and plenty of water during the nursing period. She should also be allowed to rest as much as possible.

If you have any concerns about your Shih Tzu's labor or delivery, do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian.
