What to Feed Baby Canaries

Feeding baby canaries involves providing a nutritious and balanced diet that supports their growth and development. Here's what you can feed baby canaries:

1. Laying Food:

Provide soft, high-protein foods to the mother canary when she is laying eggs. This can include a mix of soft-boiled eggs, fresh fruits, and vegetables like apples, pears, and finely grated carrots.

2. Nestling Food:

When the baby canaries (nestlings) hatch and start begging for food, you can feed them a diet of these nutritious egg food combinations:

* Hard-Boiled Egg & Rusk: Finely mash a hard-boiled egg yolk with crushed water biscuits (rusks). Add a bit of water to make it moist and easy for the nestlings to swallow.

* Egg Food: Mix equal parts of hard-boiled egg yolk, finely grated apple or pear, and bird seed powder (available at pet stores).

* Commercial Egg Food: Commercially prepared egg food specifically formulated for canaries is available in pet stores. Follow the instructions on the package for preparation and feeding.

3. Weaning Food:

As baby canaries grow older, gradually introduce weaning foods to help them transition to a seed diet. Some good weaning foods include:

* Soaked Canary Seed: Soak canary seeds in warm water for a few hours until they become soft and swollen. Drain and offer them to the baby canaries.

* Fruit and Vegetable Mix: Offer small pieces of chopped fruits like apples, pears, and bananas, as well as finely grated vegetables like carrots and spinach.

* Sprouted Seeds: Soak various seeds like canary seed, chia, and flax in water overnight. Drain the water, rinse the seeds, and offer them to the baby canaries when they start to sprout.

4. Transitioning to Seed Diet:

As baby canaries grow older and become fledglings, start introducing them to a seed-based diet. Provide a variety of canary seed mixes, along with other seeds like linseed, niger seed, and millet. Ensure the seeds are fresh and of high quality.

It's important to note that providing a varied and balanced diet helps ensure that baby canaries receive the essential nutrients they need for proper growth and development. Always keep a clean water source available for the canaries to keep them hydrated. If you have any concerns about feeding your baby canaries, it's best to consult an experienced bird keeper or a veterinarian.
