Why Do Cats Roll in Dirt? Understanding Their Behavior and Its Benefits

Have you ever noticed your cat rolling in the dirt in your backyard? It can be a really surprising sight for many owners because cats are generally quite meticulous about their cleanliness. You may feel that your cat is being mischievous. However, dirt bathing is an instinctual habit for cats that are looking to groom themselves.

Why do cats dig in dirt?

You may be surprised to know this is a healthy activity which helps them take care of their digestive systems. It also allows them to stay cool in hot weather. Some of the most common reasons that instigate cats to roll in dirt are discussed below.

Grooming

It doesn’t matter how much time your cat spends on preening itself indoors, he/she will always enjoy a roll in the yard. This is because cats use dirt to groom themselves (ironic, right?). Rolling in the dirt or rough surfaces helps them shed old fur from their coats, but unfortunately it makes them dirty and dander accumulates in the process.

Declawed cats may roll in the dirt more than others, because they lack claws to help them remove their old fur.

Scratching itchy parts

Infection in the fur can be extremely disturbing for your feline friend. The infected cat will try to relieve the itch by rubbing his/her body against all sorts of things, like furniture. Likewise, they can also roll in the dirt for scratching the itchy parts of the body. Other than soothing the itching sensation, rolling in dirt can also be useful for removing the infesting parasites.

These skin infections can become quite severe if left untreated. For this reason, you must take these first signs seriously and consult your vet to treat the infection. You can also use a cat flea collar to kill (and/or repel) the parasites that are infesting your pet.

Cooling down

Rolling around in the dirt can also keep your cat cool and fresh. This is because the thicker layer of soil (underneath the top dry layer) is actually moist and soft. Therefore, it offers a pleasant and relaxing experience to your feline, particularly on a scorching day. Consequently, cats try to find a cool place where they could freshen themselves up by rolling in dirt.

Proper functioning of the digestive system

Just like humans, cats do need bacteria to protect themselves against digestive diseases. We often use yogurt to promote the proper functioning of our digestive system. In the case of cats, dirt is responsible for providing them with the necessary probiotics.
