Brave House Cat Chases Black Bear Out of Backyard

A recent TikTok video captured an unexpected showdown in a Canadian backyard: an American black bear ventured onto a small garden, trampoline and toddler‑size slide, only to be chased away by a determined house cat.

In the 16‑second clip, the bear appears, sniffs around, and then darts for the fence. The cat leaps into the frame, sprinting straight toward the intruder. The startled bear retreats, running around the yard and over the fence.

One viewer noted that a cat in Alaska also “chases black bears,” while others joked that their cats are scared of doorbells. The incident highlights how even a domestic feline can act protectively when its territory is threatened.

Are black bears generally timid?

According to Dr. Lynn Rogers, founder of the North American Bear Center, black bears are relatively shy compared with larger predators. Their evolutionary history with apex hunters such as saber‑toothed cats and lions has fostered a “run first, ask questions later” mindset.

Nevertheless, experts advise staying calm, speaking quietly, and avoiding sudden movements if you encounter a bear. Do not run. Make yourself appear larger by raising your arms. While black bear attacks are rare, grizzly bears are up to 20 times more dangerous and are more likely to charge (Alaska Frontier). Grizzlies can be distinguished by a prominent shoulder hump and shorter, rounded ears, whereas black bears have longer, pointed ears and lack the hump.

In most cases, keeping a safe distance and never attempting to feed or provoke the animal will prevent conflict.
