How Do Rats Reproduce?

1. Male and female rats reach sexual maturity at around 6 weeks of age.

2. The female rat (also known as a doe) will go into heat for about 24 hours every 4-5 days. During this time, she will be receptive to mating.

3. The male rat (also known as a buck) will mount the female and insert his penis into her vagina. The male will then ejaculate, and the sperm will travel to the female's uterus.

4. The gestation period for rats is about 22 days. During this time, the female rat will build a nest out of materials such as paper, cloth, or straw.

5. The female rat will give birth to a litter of 6-12 babies (also known as pups) The pups will be born blind and hairless, and they will weigh about 2 grams each.

6. The pups will grow quickly, and they will be weaned by the time they are about 3 weeks old. At this point, they will be able to eat solid food and will be ready to leave the nest.

7. Rats can reproduce multiple times per year, and a single female rat can produce hundreds of offspring in her lifetime.
