Clio the Ragdoll: A Story of Love, Healing, and Gentle Companionship
When I was young I had a tabby “Baby” for 19 years. She was truly the only cat I could imagine loving. When Baby died about 6 years ago I thought I would never have another cat. Eventually came the time when I was ready. But it had to be the right cat to replace such a special animal….
When I was 10 years old I had a Cat Fancy Magazine that did an article on the Ragdoll cat…could it be! A cat that would fall limp in your arms and let you carry them around like a baby!! I vowed that someday I would have a cat like this. The years went on and because Baby was in my life I never thought of it again, until she left this world and I remembered the breed that had inspired my imagination!
We found a breeder after much research “lottarags” in Billerica MA. She had beautiful cats and it seemed to be a small breeder. We intended to get a kitten and signed up for a Seal Lynx Bi-color female, knowing we may have to wait a while. After many months “our” litter was due – but a surprise! Denise e-mailed me to let me know she had a retired show cat available – an adult lynx
two years old. She said she was a sweet cat and thought we would be the perfect couple to take her. We had our hearts set on a kitten but when I saw her picture my heart literally jumped in my chest!! We knew we had no choice but to go and see her.
We went to visit “Bette Davis” her former show name she is a former Grand Champion – and we were hooked!! I immediately felt that this was the cat I was meant to have, my husband was hooked as well. She let us hold her and just sat in our laps and purred.
Today – 10 months later Clio as we named her (after a sushi restaurant in Boston) is our constant companion. Every night she runs to greet us at the door when we come home from work. She flops down, rolls over and wants us to rub her belly!
She loves to play “fetch” with the crinkle balls we got her (she has lost nearly 20 of them), LOVES laser toys and feather teaser toys maybe because of her days in the show ring, and has a vast selection to choose from! We spoil her rotten but he is the
least spoiled cat I’ve seen. She is like our baby and every night she comes to bed with us, and even lets us brush her teeth. She plays at least twice a day and runs laps around our home. Whoever said Ragdolls are lazy this one is NOT. She loves to cuddle under blankets or “tents” as we call them and demands to snuggle at every chance she can get. She is the sweetest animal I have ever seen – more like a human than a cat.
Besides being so gorgeous our cat Clio has a heart of gold and the soul of a companion that is truly grateful for everything we give her. She has transformed our lives and we cannot imagine it without her. I credit the breeder for being able to give up such a loving cat and know that it was in her best interest as well as she is the “only” cat. True to her breed she follows us around the house and has to be in the same room as us.
She is our gift and we are so grateful.
