Meet Rocky: The Ragdoll Cat Who Became Our Week's Star

Rocky was introduced into our lives in June 1, 2009.  We were volunteering with a rescue organization called Shelter Pet Partners in San Diego at a Petco store.  Rocky was the last kitty on the bus from Kern County animal control, for a long drive from a high kill shelter.  He was a bottle baby kitten and had been found out in the wild?   He reminded me of a baby raccoon, so just like the Beatles song “Rocky Raccoon” the name fit.

He started out very small and cute, one of three foster kittens we had taken in, temporary only.  He was mostly white and underweight.  He captured our hearts and remained.  The other kittens found homes and because our home was small, we only had room for Rocky Raccoon.

At first, we never heard of a ragdoll cat, especially one found on the streets of Kern county?  As he grew, his coat became longer and began to change colors, darkening.  We began to research what kind of kitty is this?

We visited our favorite January event, the cat show in Del Mar, California with pictures and questions.  A breeder of ragdolls looked at the pictures we had of him and said yes he was a ragdoll, not show quality because his markings were off but a ragdoll none the less!  Rocky the Ragdoll.

The physical ragdoll traits he has are his pretty blue eyes.  His long hair coat and the “saddle” of dark colors?  Seal point?  He changed colors over time! He flops and is good about being held.  He is not really a lap cat, but he loves to be brushed and always comes running when he sees the brush.  He is also large, weight unknown but an armful.

Rocky has always been very playful, easy going, loves his can food for dinner and Royal Canin Ragdoll dry food during the day.  He is very quiet unless he is in the car, then gets stressed but we get through it.  He is an indoor kitty only, but loves the porch with fresh breezes and birds flying by.  He never meows, just an occasional mew…soft..although he has cat attitude when he wants to.

He is playful and always interested in what is going on in the home.

We call him Mr. Teddy Bear or Tbear for short. After three years on his own, he finally got a companion.

December 23, 2012 Misty came into our home.  She came from a pet store down the street, the owner had been breeding Ragdoll cats for a long time but this was the last litter.  We used to go visit the pet store to buy supplies and of course visit all the ragdoll kitten litters!

Misty and Rocky took about a week to sign their peace treaty.  Initially, Misty would puff up and look her most ferocious puffy self and Rocky would barf!  Now they get along fine, not great buddies, but they chase each other around, wrestle and occasionally clean each others faces…cute, but usually leads to a wrestling match?  It beats barfing!
