Choosing the Ideal Spot for Your Cat’s Litter Box

Cats enjoy their independence and their privacy.  When caring for your cat, one of the most important questions you must answer is, “Where do I put my cat’s litter box?”  Some cat owners may put the litter box in a closet, laundry room, behind a bathroom door or a shower stall.  Although this may seem private, it may be problematic to their feline friends.  Take for example the laundry room.  It may be nice and quiet but, when you are in the middle of a wash and dry, you may scare your cat to the point where he does not feel safe to do his business.  In some of the other places cats may become trapped and as a result, may never want to use their litter boxes.  Litter boxes should never smell.  If your box has an odor clean and dry it thoroughly so that even the pickiest nose cannot detect any smell.

Litter boxes should be placed in a quiet and safe spot.  Couch down to your cat’s level to see what he may see.  Sometimes, your cat can give you ideas of where to put his litter box.  Try different places in your home and see how your cat reacts.  His actions will eventually tell you where he wants his litter box to stay.  Do not keep the litter box next to his food.  Make sure you find a low traffic, quiet area where your cat will be able to eliminate in peace.
