Can Cats Eat Garlic?
Even a small amount of garlic can cause poisoning in cats, and the effects can be severe. Garlic can damage red blood cells, leading to anemia. It can also cause stomach and intestinal problems, such as vomiting and diarrhea. In some cases, garlic can even be fatal.
Symptoms of garlic poisoning in cats include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Lethargy
- Weakness
- Anemia
- Difficulty breathing
- Pale gums
- Jaundice
If you think your cat has eaten garlic, contact your veterinarian immediately. There is no specific antidote for garlic poisoning, but your veterinarian can provide supportive care to help your cat recover.
Prevention is the best way to protect your cat from garlic poisoning. Keep all garlic and other Allium plants out of your cat's reach, and be careful not to feed your cat any food that may contain garlic.
