Can Cats Safely Eat Eggs? A Vet‑Approved Guide for Cats and Kittens

While cats can eat eggs, they shouldn’t become a daily staple. Eggs provide high‑quality protein and essential amino acids, but they lack the balanced nutrients found in commercial cat food.

Cooked Eggs Are Best

Always serve eggs that are fully cooked—boiled, scrambled, or poached—without added oil, butter, or seasonings. Cooking eliminates Salmonella, E. coli, and other bacteria that raw eggs can harbor. Even cooked egg whites are safe; just keep the preparation plain.

Raw Eggs Can Be Risky

Raw or undercooked eggs pose two main risks. First, avidin in raw egg whites binds biotin, a vital B‑vitamin, reducing its absorption. Second, raw eggs may contain harmful bacteria. While wild cats occasionally consume raw eggs, domesticated cats have different immune systems and should not rely on raw eggs for nutrition.

Are Eggs Good for Cats?

Eggs can serve as an occasional treat, but they should never replace a complete, balanced diet. Veterinarians recommend that eggs make up no more than 10 % of a cat’s daily caloric intake—roughly one tablespoon of scrambled egg for an average adult cat. Excessive egg consumption adds unnecessary fat and can contribute to obesity.

What About Kittens and Eggshells?

Kittens have heightened nutritional needs and more delicate immune systems. Do not feed them eggs as a primary food source. Eggshells, when ground into a fine powder, can provide calcium, but it is safer to use a commercial kitten formula that contains all essential nutrients.

Signs of Egg Allergies

Most cats tolerate eggs well, but some may develop allergies. Look for itchy skin, ear infections, or gastrointestinal upset. If any of these symptoms appear after feeding eggs, discontinue use and consult your veterinarian.
