The Khao Manee Cat: History, Appearance, and Care Tips
What Is a Khao Manee Cat?

The Khao Manee is celebrated worldwide for its striking pure‑white coat and elegant demeanor. Whether you find one in Thailand or the United States, these cats combine curiosity, intelligence, playfulness, and affection into a balanced companion.
What Does “Khao Manee” Mean?
In Thai, “khao manee” can be translated as “white gem” or “white diamond,” a reference to the star‑burst pattern often seen in the irises. A native Thai speaker clarifies that the phrase simply means “pure white,” which is fitting for the breed’s hallmark appearance.
Historical Roots
Like the Korat, Siamese, and Suphalak, the Khao Manee originated in Thailand. Some researchers point to the *Tamra Maew*—a collection of manuscripts from the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1351–1767)—as evidence of ancient Thai cat breeds. The *Tamra Maew* contains detailed portraits and brief descriptions that likely served as a breed standard during its creation.
Is the Khao Manee in the *Tamra Maew*?
While the manuscript does feature an all‑white cat, it is labeled “Khao Plort.” The Khao Plort’s eyes are uniformly colored, unlike many modern Khao Manee that display heterochromia. It remains uncertain whether the odd‑eye trait emerged after the *Tamra Maew* was written, or whether the Khao Plort and Khao Manee are distinct lines.
Modern History in Thailand
During the reign of King Rama V, the Khao Manee was a favored pet of the Thai royal family. Responsibility for breeding and care eventually passed to Namdee Witta, a film producer who invested his own savings into a cattery and a now‑defunct “Cat Museum.”
Introduction to the United States
In 1999, endangered‑species specialist Colleen Freymuth transported the first Khao Manee cats to the U.S. to establish a conservation program. Today, only one U.S. breeder—registered with CFA and TICA—produces Khao Manee cats, underscoring the breed’s rarity worldwide.
American vs. Thai Lineage
Western registries require multi‑generation pure‑bred status, whereas Thai breeders often incorporate street cats that match *Tamra Maew* descriptions. As a result, American‑bred Khao Manee may differ slightly in conformation, yet both share the same core genetic traits.
Physical Characteristics

Key features include a glossy white coat, large luminous eyes (often blue or gold, occasionally both—heterochromia), a muscular yet flexible build, and high cheekbones. Males typically weigh 8–11 lb, while females range from 6–8 lb. Tail kinks are common and acceptable in shows.
White Coat Genetics
The dominant‑white gene masks underlying color, allowing a cat genetically predisposed to be black, for example, to appear pure white. Occasionally, a non‑white kitten may appear in a litter of all‑white kittens; such kittens are valuable for breeding because they reduce the risk of deafness associated with the dominant‑white gene.
Eye Color Variations
Although many Khao Manee display heterochromia, a significant number have both eyes the same color. The eye color does not affect temperament.
Temperament
Khao Manee cats are friendly, sociable, and intelligent. They are energetic and athletic but equally enjoy cuddling on laps or riding on shoulders. These cats integrate well with other pets and are suitable for families with well‑mannered children. Many enjoy interactive play, such as fetch, and some are notably vocal, often expressing themselves through distinct vocalizations.
“They have a sense of humour, if that is possible for a cat, they do silly things, then look to see your reaction. They also purr, and I mean purr from the time they see you until you leave and go elsewhere.”
Health Considerations
Generally healthy, Khao Manee cats can develop congenital deafness if they possess blue eyes—a condition linked to the dominant‑white gene’s effect on inner ear development. Not all white cats with blue eyes are deaf, but owners should monitor hearing, especially in kittens with heterochromia.
