Is Tabasco Sauce Safe for Cats? A Vet’s Guide to Feeding Your Feline
Ah, tabasco sauce. The king of sauces. Most people who love hot sauce have this in their cabinet. It’s great for changing the flavor of bland food. If something does not taste great, grab a bottle and put a few drops on there and you are good to go. A whole different flavor. I bet you are wondering if you can use that on your picky cat, right? If it can make food taste better for us, or for picky eaters than it might work well for cats too right? Well, first you need to ask yourself, can cats eat tabasco sauce? Yes, they can. But the question is not can they, it is should they? And the answer is no. It is just not good for them. By the way, do you know what Tabasco sauce is made of? Well, the ingredients are very simple.
- red peppers
- salt
- vinegar
And that is about it. By the way, my favorite is the green one, which just so happens to be the mildest of the Tabasco sauces. It is so delicious and does not have the same kick as the red one. The red one was my favorite for many years though. You can put red tabasco sauce on anything and POW the flavor changes completely. There are several others as well, like Habanero, Buffalo and even Scorpion, which is actually hotter than the original red one. I never knew there were so many until researching for this article. Anyway, I do love hot sauces, but here is the question of the day.
Can cats eat tabasco sauce?
This is a really interesting question and not too much research has been done on this exact question. Probably because it is a very simple answer. Yes, they can. But like I said earlier, sometimes should and can are different. Personally I say that cats cannot have tabasco sauce. Not even the mildest green one. It is just not a good idea.

Is spicy food bad for cats?
Well, since they really cannot enjoy it in the same way we can, there really is no need to give them any spicy foods. Often times spicy foods contain onions, garlic, shallots, onions and other things which can be very deadly to cats. So, yes, spicy food can be bad for cats. But if fed in extreme moderation and done very carefully, it can be safe. However, one still has to wonder why anyone would want to feed their cat anything spicy.
Will tabasco sauce hurt a cat?
Yes, it will. Think about it this way. Cats can not taste sweetness or spicy. They do not have the tastebuds for it. Therefore, they may eat hot sauce without realizing the damage that it is doing until it’s done. The original Red tabasco sauce has a Scoville Rating: 2500 – 5000. The Scoville rating is a way to measure capsaicin. That is the chemical in peppers responsible for the heat you feel after eating something hot. If a cat eats a large amount of sauce, they can suffer burns to their mouth, esophagus and digestive tract.
What happens if a cat eats spicy food?
Well, first of all there is a good chance it will steer clear of spicy foods in the future. (there are those out there who believe their cats actually like it) But if someone’s cats eat tabasco sauce, they may be okay, it depends on how much they consumed. The good part is the regular red tabasco sauce does not contain onion, garlic, shallots or anything else which is very toxic to cats. It is straight up hotness from capsaicin. And that is a problem that can cause burns to their mouths, esophagus and digestive tract. Therefore it is important to be wary of your cat behaving differently.
