Is Hot Sauce Safe for Cats? Expert Advice on Spicy Foods
Cats love food, just like we do. In many cases they may love the same kinds of foods as we do. Some very popular flavors may be salty or meaty flavors. Fishy smells really get their noses twitching, so if you are having fish they may really try to get some of it off your plate. Surprisingly enough if you eat hot sauce, they might try to eat some of it as well. Spicy foods like hot sauces can have a very strong or distinct smell which may attract some cats. If it is on meat or fish, they may have even more interest in enjoying it. But should you give some to your cat? Can cats eat hot sauce?
I love hot sauce. There was a time when almost everything on my plate needed hot sauce. Having grown up in Southern California, hot sauce was something which was always on the table while growing up. Now, that I am older my desire to burn my mouth off has lessened, but like I said earlier, I love hot sauce as do many people throughout the world. But what about our cats?

Hot sauce and cats
Well, cats are not really accustomed to eating hot sauce. Their palates are much more basic. While the peppers in hot sauce may not harm your cat, the capsaicin in the pepper itself can cause it discomfort. You know that burning feeling you get in your mouth? Well, if you give your cat hot sauce that is really hot, that means it is loaded with capsaicin, and that will irritate the skin in the mouth, throat, stomach and even digestive tract. If your cat does not vomit it up it may suffer diarrhea.
Now, not that I am recommending it, cause I am not, but if you are going to give your cat hot sauce, make sure it is mild. My cat ate hot sauce once, well I should say licked at it. It was very mild and there was no immediate reaction to it. It was actually sweeter than most hot sauces. Even though your cat can not taste sweetness because it lacks sweet receptors, it is far better than hot sauces that are actually hot like tabasco sauce. But in reality, your cat does not need hot sauce at all and is better off without it just like my cat was.
Is hot sauce harmful to cats?
It can be. It all depends on what is in it? I prefer to say that if I can see pieces floating in it, then yes, it is very harmful. I cannot think of anything that would be in hot sauce that would be good for a cat to ingest. Even tomatoes are considered toxic to cats because they contain an element called solanine. I do not think a packet of mild hot sauce from a fast food restaurant would be dangerous for your cat, however, there is no nutritional benefit one bit whatsoever coming out of it, so there is no need to give your cat even the mildest of hot sauce.
What happens if cats eats hot sauce?
Well, it really depends on what is in it and how much was eaten. If your cat ate hot sauce, but it was mild, there may not be too much to worry about. However, something to consider may be what was in it. If the hot sauce had onions, garlic, onions of any type, than a trip to your veterinarian may be a good idea. Some times hot sauce can be very runny with no sign of a anything in it, and in that case, you are generally safe. But if you see lots of onions or jalapeños pieces in it, than I would definitely visit the vet as soon as possible.
Symptoms of hot sauce ingestion in cats
When cats eat hot sauce, it is cause for concern and a responsible cat parent should pay very close attention to their feline friend to make sure they are okay.
