How to Give a Cat Medicine
Giving your cat medicine can be a challenging task, but with a little patience and the right technique, it can be done. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to give your cat medicine:
1. Gather your supplies.
You will need:
- The prescribed medication
- A pill gun (or an oral syringe, if the medicine is liquid)
- A treat for your cat
- A towel
- A second person (optional, but helpful)
2. Prepare the medicine.
If the medicine is in pill form, open up the capsule or crush the pill into a powder. If it is liquid, draw up the correct dose into the oral syringe.
3. Wrap your cat in a towel.
This will help to restrain your cat and prevent it from scratching or biting you. If you have a second person, have them help you hold the cat.
4. Open your cat's mouth.
Use your fingers to gently pry open your cat's mouth.
5. Insert the pill or syringe into your cat's mouth.
If you are using a pill gun, insert it into the side of your cat's mouth, behind the canine teeth. Push the plunger until the pill is released into the back of your cat's throat. If you are using a syringe, insert it into the corner of your cat's mouth and slowly squirt the medicine into its mouth.
6. Hold your cat's mouth closed for a few seconds.
This will help the cat swallow the medicine.
7. Give your cat a treat.
This will reward your cat for being good and help to make the experience more positive.
8. Monitor your cat for any adverse reactions.
Stop the medication and contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat exhibits any signs of distress or adverse effects, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy.
_Here are some additional tips for giving your cat medicine:_
- Be calm and confident. Your cat will sense if you are nervous, and this will make it more difficult to give them medicine.
- If your cat resists taking the medicine, try hiding it in a treat or some wet food.
- If you are still having difficulty giving your cat medicine, talk to your veterinarian. They may be able to provide you with additional tips or may suggest a different method of administration.
