How high can cats jump vertically?

As a rule of thumb, cats can jump up to five times their body length. Considering an average cat is about 18 inches in body length, he/she can jump up to 2.4 meters. These figures are for average cats. The breeds that are taller and longer can jump even higher.

In comparison with the average human, cats can jump incredibly high. For reference, you can use the world record for men’s high jump (2.45 m), set by Javier Sotomayor of Cuba. Similarly, when compared with average high jumps in the Olympics, cats jump quite high.

Why can cats jump so high?

Cats have a low body weight ratio, strong muscles, and incredibly strong bones. Their tails play a vital role in keeping them balanced. Likewise, their hind legs have incredible strength that they use to propel themselves into the air when jumping.

Before cats jump, they crouch on all fours. Once they are in this jumping position, they raise their front paws while stretching their torso upwards. After that, they push hard on their hind legs to leap into the air.

It is believed that cats get these amazing jumping skills from their wild feline ancestors. They survived on hunting and needed to be good at jumping to catch their prey. Although household cats do not hunt, they do have the hunting instincts and abilities of their ancestors. These are the reasons why domestic cats jump incredibly high, to unreachable places.

Can cats jump off balconies?

Cats are generally aware of their surroundings and have a good sense of preservation. Yes, there have been accidents involving cats falling from high places, such as balconies. However, it usually happens when a cat gets distracted. For instance, the cat could be chasing a bird or a ball, and leaps off the balcony to cat the target.

Another important factor that causes some cats to jump down from balconies is the lack of realization. Some felines are unable to determine how high they are while looking out of a window. Therefore, they might jump off balconies due to this miscalculation.
