How to Train Your Cat Shake Hands

Step 1: Gather your supplies

* Treats

* Clicker (optional)

* Target stick (optional)

Step 2: Start by teaching your cat to touch your hand

Hold a treat in your hand and lure your cat towards it. When your cat touches your hand, click the clicker or say "yes" and give him the treat. Repeat this exercise for several minutes, until your cat is consistently touching your hand.

Step 3: Introduce the target stick

If you're using a target stick, hold it in front of your cat's nose and lure him towards it. When your cat touches the target stick, click the clicker or say "yes" and give him the treat. Repeat this exercise for several minutes, until your cat is consistently touching the target stick.

Step 4: Start shaping the handshake

Once your cat is touching the target stick consistently, you can start shaping the handshake. Move the target stick down to your hand and lure your cat towards it. When your cat touches your hand, click the clicker or say "yes" and give him the treat. Repeat this exercise for several minutes, until your cat is consistently shaking your hand.

Step 5: Fade out the target stick

Once your cat is shaking your hand consistently, you can start to fade out the use of the target stick. Start by only moving the target stick a little bit each time you lure your cat. Eventually, you should be able to fade out the target stick completely.

Step 6: Practice, practice, practice!

The more you practice shaking hands with your cat, the better he'll become at it. Make sure to keep training sessions short and fun, and always end them on a positive note.

Here are some additional tips for training your cat to shake hands:

* Start training your cat when he's young. Kittens are typically easier to train than adult cats.

* Be patient and consistent with your training. It may take some time for your cat to learn how to shake hands.

* Make sure to use positive reinforcement training. Never punish your cat for not shaking your hand.

* Keep training sessions short and fun. Cats have short attention spans, so it's important to keep training sessions short and sweet.

* Always end training sessions on a positive note. This will help your cat associate training with positive experiences.
