How Long Do Puggles Live?
Puggle health is generally very good, with few major problems to be aware of. However, there are several Puggles health issues that you should keep an eye out for, due either to their heritage or their size.
* Eye Problems: Pugs and Beagles are both known to have various eye problems, including glaucoma and cataracts. While there’s no way to completely prevent these, regular checkups with your vet can ensure they are caught early.
* Ear Infections: Given the Pug’s distinctive ear shape and the Beagle’s floppy ears, Puggles are prone to ear infections. Keep your Puggle’s ears dry, and consult your vet about a regular cleaning schedule to help prevent infections.
* Kneecap Dislocation: Both parent breeds are prone to a kneecap condition known as luxating patella, which can affect stability when walking. Be on the lookout for any sign of lameness or skipping while walking.
* Allergies: Both parent breeds are known for skin allergies, so it is likely this could also affect your Puggle. Monitor your dog’s skin for any indications of allergies, including itchiness, rashes, or licking of paws.
* Dental Problems: Dental problems are common to many small dogs due to overcrowding of teeth in the mouth. Be sure your Puggle gets regular dental checkups and cleanings.
In addition to the Puggles health problems listed above, keep in mind that small dogs often have a sensitive stomach. This means that you need to be careful when it comes to feeding and that feeding your Puggle human foods should be avoided. Small dogs can also get a hypoglycemic attack if they do not eat regularly, so it is advised to feed your dog multiple small meals throughout the day.
