How to Breed the Neon Tetra

Here’s a step-by-step guide to breeding neon tetras.

Step 1: Select breeding pairs

– Choose healthy and sexually mature neon tetras. The males will have a slightly longer dorsal fin and a slender body, while the females will have a rounder belly.

– Keep the breeding pairs in a separate breeding tank. The tank should be about 10 gallons and have a pH level between 5.0 and 6.0, a temperature between 72 and 79°F, and a hardness of 5 to 15 dGH.

– Provide the breeding pair with plenty of live or frozen foods, such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

Step 2: Condition the breeding pair

– To condition the breeding pair, increase the water temperature in the breeding tank to about 82°F.

– Feed the breeding pair live or frozen foods daily.

Step 3: Introduce a spawning mop or java moss

– Introduce a spawning mop or java moss to the breeding tank. The spawning mop should be made of nylon fibers or yarn, and it should be about 6 inches in diameter. The java moss should be about 4 inches in diameter.

– Place the spawning mop or java moss near the surface of the water.

Step 4: Wait for the breeding pair to spawn

– The breeding pair will spawn in the morning. The female will lay her eggs on the spawning mop or java moss, and the male will fertilize them.

– The eggs will hatch in about 24 hours.

Step 5: Remove the breeding pair from the breeding tank

– After the eggs have hatched, remove the breeding pair from the breeding tank.

Step 6: Raise the fry

– The fry will feed on infusoria and other small live food for the first few days. As they grow older, they can be fed brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

– Keep the water in the grow-out tank clean and free of debris.

– The fry will be ready to be sold or traded after about 3 months.

Here are some additional tips for breeding neon tetras:

– Provide the breeding pair with a hiding place. This can be a piece of driftwood, a rock, or even a plastic plant.

– Keep the breeding tank dimly lit. Neon tetras are more likely to spawn in dimmer light.

– Be patient. It may take several attempts before the breeding pair successfully spawns.
