Feline Infectious Peritonitis Unveils Key Insights Into Human Coronavirus Pathogenesis
Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have made a breakthrough in understanding feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), revealing its potential to inform human coronavirus research.
The study demonstrates that FIP spreads through a cat’s immune system, infecting a broader range of immune cells than previously thought, offering a valuable model for long‑term coronavirus disease in humans.
FIP is caused by a mutated form of feline coronavirus and remains one of the most devastating diseases in cats; without treatment, mortality approaches 100%. The virus shares striking similarities with severe human coronavirus conditions, including widespread inflammation, multi‑organ damage, and persistent or recurring symptoms.
Until now, scientists believed the FIP virus targeted a single immune cell type. The new study challenged this notion by analyzing lymph node samples from naturally infected cats.
Researchers identified viral RNA in multiple immune cell types, including B lymphocytes that produce antibodies and T lymphocytes that coordinate immune defense. Crucially, the virus actively replicates within these cells.
This expanded infection profile has profound implications. In human medicine, it is suspected that coronaviruses may persist in immune tissues, contributing to chronic illness or relapse. Cats with FIP provide a rare, naturally occurring model to observe these processes.
The team also found that viral remnants can persist in immune cells even after antiviral therapy. Clinically healthy cats may still harbor these viral traces, and since some immune cells can survive for years, this lingering infection may explain relapses or long‑term immune dysfunction.
These findings position FIP as a powerful comparative model for dissecting chronic inflammation and post‑viral syndromes, including long COVID in humans.
