German Shepherd Tommy Joins Neighborhood Kids' Football Game and Quickly Becomes a Star

For a dog, chasing a ball feels instinctive. Tommy, a German Shepherd, spotted a field of children playing football and, after receiving a friendly nod from the kids, sprinted onto the grass and started running with the same enthusiasm as the human players. A TikTok video of his playful antics has since amassed over 390,000 likes.

Ok this is just so SOO special to me. My neighbors and I were sitting on the grassy hills and our little kids were somewhere behind us. Well, random kids came and they had a baseball and football and of course my dog wanted to say hi to them. So I went over and told them his name is Tommy and he would love to run with them. They said that’s okay! He joined them as if he were a little kid as well. I have 3 dogs and worked with probably a thousand different dogs but this dog’s temperament is not from this world. When they went home they all told him goodbye and he came to me as happy as a dog can be. Now he’s deeply asleep. I wish I could clone this dog. My best boy. Thank you to those precious children for letting Tommy be a part of them! #germanshepherd #germanshepherdsoftiktok #gsdoftiktok #gsdlife #gsdlover

Tommy quickly established himself as a key player: he follows the ball, watches the kids’ pauses, and chases the ball with patience. Some viewers were impressed by his understanding of the game. One viewer commented, “This may be the best thing I’ve seen in quite some time,” while another added, “He is absolutely a gentle giant. Look how careful he is with them.” In a follow‑up video, it seems he’s been allowed to join every game on the block!

Dog sports are a fun way to channel canine energy

Playing football with the neighborhood kids is a blast, but there are many other ways to exercise your pup’s athletic side. Teach them to catch, and you can spend the afternoon with a game of frisbee or disc dog. If you want to add a competitive element, canine agility sports might be the answer. An agility course is similar to a human obstacle course. To complete the challenge, the dog may need to leap over hurdles, weave around poles, or scurry through tunnels. Agility courses don’t rely on the dog alone; you’ll need to be right there to act as a guide. You can take a few classes to see if you’re interested in the competition circuit. If it’s too intense, keep it casual and set up an agility course in your backyard!

Is your dog more couch potato than athletic superstar? Forget the obstacle courses and have a laugh at these adorable dogs who are bad at sports.
