Many senior dogs may experience hind leg weakness. This is often referred to as Canine Degenerative Myelopathy. This disease is often the most common reason why an older dog may experience hind leg weakness. Often abbreviated DM, it can eventually lead to loss of bladder control or paralysis.

Sometimes the vet may be able to test to see if your pet has the gene mutation. This disease is similar to ALS and Lou Gehring’s disease in humans. Even though it can affect any breed, it is sometimes widespread in large breed dogs such as (German Shepherds or Collies).

Your vet can test your pet for this disease using his saliva. If you are thinking of breeding your pet, you might consider screening for DM. Make sure that you have his complete medical history when you bring him to the vet. Be observant as to what his symptoms are. The vet might recommend blood & urine tests or maybe an MRI.

Always be cautious. Your pet is depending on you for his survival. If you believe your pet is in any distress, take him to the vet. Do not wait! His life may depend on it.
