Prevent Antibiotic-Related Dental Staining in Pets: What You Need to Know

I have recently started a series of videos on various reasons why your pet may have dental staining. One of the most common causes of teeth staining is if your pet is given antibiotics when they’re young and their teeth are still developing.

Which Antibiotics Cause Teeth Staining?

Specifically, antibiotics classified as “tetracyclines” are most likely to cause teeth staining. 

Thankfully, most experienced breeders and trusted veterinarians know to avoid this classification of antibiotics because they are aware of the dental staining that often results.

How It Happens

If your pet is given antibiotics while their baby teeth are growing, staining may happen. It can also occur while their adult teeth are forming.

Can It Be Reversed?

Unfortunately, if your pet’s teeth develop stains from antibiotics, there’s not really anything you can do to reverse it.

However, you should make sure to bring your pet in for regular dental checkups which will prevent further staining in the future.
