Understanding Bleeding Gums in Pets: Causes, Symptoms, and Care

Maybe you’re brushing your pet’s teeth or they’re playing with their favorite toy and you notice some blood coming from their mouth. Your first instinct might be to freak out, but don’t panic!

Common Cause of Bleeding Gums

Most likely it’s an infection in the gum tissue around their teeth, which is a common side effect of a gingival infection. This infection is essentially a buildup of bacteria in the mouth that occurs over time.

Basically, the body reacts by causing inflammation in an attempt to fight the bacteria and this causes the bleeding in the gums. A gingival infection does require treatment.

What to Do If Your Pet’s Gums Are Bleeding

If your pet is exhibiting gum bleeding, take them to your veterinarian to be evaluated. They will most likely do a deep cleaning, which will help your pet’s gum tissues start to heal and become healthy again.
