Stetson’s Puppy Raiser Questionnaire: Key Insights for Guide Dog Training

After a brief pause, I’m back to share the latest update on Stetson’s transition to Guide Dogs of America (GDA). Last Saturday, I entrusted Stetson to the GDA campus, and while leaving him in the kennel was emotionally challenging, I’m confident he’s now in expert hands with highly trained technicians and dedicated trainers.

During our arrival, we captured a few photos and dropped off three essential items: Stetson’s GDA Puppy In Training jacket, his detailed medical sheet outlining all medications and vaccinations, and a puppy raiser questionnaire designed to give trainers deeper insight into his temperament and behaviors.

Below is the completed questionnaire, reflecting Stetson’s current status and the care we’ve provided.

Stetson’s Puppy Questionnaire

Puppy’s Name: Stetson

  1. Stetson’s Puppy Raiser Questionnaire: Key Insights for Guide Dog TrainingHow many family members worked with the puppy? One What ages are the children? n/a
  2. Where does the puppy sleep? In his crate next to my bed. Occasionally on his doggie bed outside the crate, sleeping through the night.
  3. What are his favorite activities? Stetson enjoys interactive play with toys at home and socializing with my other dog, Linus.
  4. What is his favorite toy? A cow‑ring shaped toy; he has already chewed it to pieces, so supervise any stuffed toys closely.
  5. Reaction to loud noises? He remains alert but has never shown fear of loud sounds since under six months old. Response to barking dogs? Alert, often curious, and may approach on leash.
  6. Exposure to other animals? Horses, cats, sheep, alpacas, ducks, rabbits, squirrels, birds, coyotes, snakes, and other dogs.
  7. Neighborhood environment? We live in a condo community in Irvine, with moderate foot traffic and proximity to a golf course surrounded by grass. Stetson has met many neighborhood dogs on our walks.
  8. Restraint tolerance? Excellent in a cradle position; stays calm unless overly excited. Vet exam? Initially excitable, then generally easy to examine. Ears cleaning? Handles well in a sit‑stay or cradle. Tie‑down? May stand initially but eventually lies down; no significant anxiety noted.
  9. Chronic health issues? Recurrent right ear infection and two episodes of chin acne.
  10. Problem areas? Excitability when meeting new people or dogs; usually calms after a few minutes. Sniffs intensely but responds to “no sniff.”
  11. Current diet? 3 cups of Canidae once daily in the morning.
  12. Additional trainer notes? Stetson’s pads are heat‑sensitive; he avoids hot surfaces like electric meter blocks and metal slabs. I use a specialized bowl to slow his eating and prevent vomiting. His right ear remains prone to infections. He once tore a claw during puppy‑sitting, possibly explaining his sensitivity to certain walking surfaces and discomfort with nail trimming.

The Journey Continues…

With Stetson now at the GDA campus, I’ll monitor his progress. If he does not select the guide dog path and returns home, I plan to transition him into a therapy dog role. I’ll keep the community updated on his adventures and welcome any topics you’d like me to cover.

Thank you for your support during Stetson’s recent transition. His new kennel mate, Ninya, quickly became a play partner, underscoring his adaptability—a vital trait for a future guide dog.
