Beach Visits with Dogs: The Silent Threat of Sand Impaction
Picture the perfect beach day: the sun is shining, waves crash, and the sand feels warm between your toes. For dog owners, a day at the shore often means bringing their four‑legged friend along for a splash and a game of fetch. But while many beaches welcome pets, a hidden danger can turn a joyous outing into a veterinary emergency.
After a routine beach adventure, TikTok star and dog mom @olliepopmaltipoo shared her experience: her pup required emergency care because of sand impaction. As summer approaches, it’s essential for pet owners to understand this risk and how to keep their dogs safe.
What is the danger?
Sand impaction occurs when a dog swallows sand that becomes lodged in the intestines, forming a blockage. The Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota defines impaction as “material compresses and forms a blockage in the intestines.” Dogs can acquire sand while playing with toys that are buried in the dunes, eating off the sand, or simply licking their paws after a swim.
Impaction can progress quickly. If untreated, it may require fluid therapy or surgical intervention.
How can I tell if my dog is suffering?
Watch for early warning signs. Common symptoms reported by Ollie’s owner include:
- Vomiting
- Shaking or trembling
- Excessive panting
- Restlessness or inability to settle
- Constipation or straining to defecate
- Abdominal pain or bloated belly
- Loss of appetite
These signs can appear within hours to a few days after sand exposure.
Prevention Tips
To keep your pup safe, consider the following practices:
- Choose toys that are less likely to trap sand, or rinse toys thoroughly after each use.
- Discourage digging in the sand and avoid allowing your dog to burrow deep holes.
- Keep treats off the sand; hand‑offer them instead.
- Avoid letting your dog drink or lick salty seawater, which can exacerbate digestive upset.
- Monitor your dog closely after beach time and seek veterinary care immediately if symptoms arise.
